Baby king penguins hatch naked, and within a few weeks they grow downy feathers. Down feathers are not waterproof, so chicks should stay out of the water until they shed.

While the parent penguins are hunting, their chicks remain in the "manger", only a few adult birds look after them.

The ghostly tree frog (crowned ghost tree frog) __Anotheca spinosa__ lives in the humid rainforests of Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico and Peru.

The ghost frog is often called the crowned frog because of the series of sharp protrusions adorning its head. A pair of large round eyes of copper or bronze color looks out from under this "crown". Several sharp spikes are scattered on the back of the mysterious tree frog.

Its mottled grayish-brown color almost does not differ from the color of fallen foliage or tree bark, and its nocturnal lifestyle and cautious nature make these tree frogs almost elusive.

The male's invocative singing can be heard a hundred meters from the hollow in which the performer himself is located. The male assigns a date to the future partner in a hollow filled with water, a bamboo trunk or giant leaves.

It's hard to call it a fight, but here you can clearly see how kangaroos use their tails, which can be called a fifth limb without hesitation.

Without a tail, kangaroos would not be able to move, stand up straight, or fight. This is very important when the kangaroo is moving at high speed; when its tail swings in sync with its legs, helping it, creating additional momentum forward and preventing the kangaroo from falling backwards.

As you can clearly see in this video, kangaroos can only hold their entire body weight on one tail, which allows them to stretch their legs towards the threat.

If you are an arboreal mammal and live in Australia, you are absolutely not immune from the snake-like strangling embrace of a bush python.

These versatile hunters use their powerful and muscular bodies to climb trees. To do this, they use a technique known as "accordion movement," in which the snake alternately stretches and contracts parts of its body to push itself up. By attaching a part of its body to a branch or the trunk itself, the snake pulls the front part of its body up.

The collared peccary __Dicotyles tajacu__ does not belong to pigs in any way! I repeat: not a pig! Although it's hard to believe...

In fairness, we must admit that both pigs and bakers belong to the same order: cetaceans (what?!).

The word "bakers" is borrowed from the language of the Brazilian Tupi Indians. It translates into Russian as "a beast that makes many roads in the forest."

These animals are very small in size: shoulder height is only 30-50 cm, body length is 80-100 cm and weight is 15-25 kg.

They are distributed in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona in the USA, in Mexico and Central America, as well as most of South America.

Collared bakers are herbivorous animals with a complex structure of the stomach, which is necessary for the digestion of coarse food. In the southern part of their range, bakers eat a variety of foods, including roots, bulbs, nuts, mushrooms, and sometimes they can eat eggs, carrion, small snakes and frogs.

The golden langur __Trachypithecus geei__ is distributed in the west of the Indian state of Assam, as well as in Bhutan. The habitat of the species is tropical forests.

The body length of the golden langur is from 50 to 70 cm, and the tail is from 70 to 90 cm, weight is from 9.5 to 12 kg. The coat color varies from cream to golden yellow, acquiring a reddish hue in winter. The dark muzzle is bordered by long hair, forming a crest typical of representatives of the genus on the upper side of the body.

These primates lead a diurnal, arboreal lifestyle, living mainly in the upper tiers of the forest. They feed mainly on leaves and fruits, having multi-chambered stomachs for more efficient use of difficult-to-digest plant foods.

The range of the species is mosaic and has been significantly reduced due to deforestation. Habitat destruction is the main threat to the species. Some of the habitats are currently under protection in India, but nevertheless this species of marmosets is considered endangered

Pigeons have been living side by side with humans for many centuries and during this time hundreds of diverse, sometimes unusual breeds have been bred. But the strangest pigeon, according to most experts, remains the Budapest short-billed turman. This "pug" of the pigeon world looks like a cartoon character created by an artist with a great sense of humor.

For some, it is the cutest bird in the world, while others consider it incredibly ugly. This unique product appeared thanks to the long-term efforts of Hungarian breeders, who set themselves the task of creating a high-class "flyer" from an ordinary pigeon, besides attracting attention.

They did it all right - the Budapest shortbill is funny, like all pigeons at the chick stage, and it gets even funnier growing up. Pigeons of this breed were first introduced in Budapest in 1907. In addition to its unusual appearance, the bird also received excellent flight characteristics - this type of turman belongs to high-flying pigeons.

__Mergus__ crumbs are ducks with a narrow elongated beak that feed not on plant food, but on fish - this is evidenced by the sharp teeth on the hooked curved beak with which the birds hold slippery prey.

The weight of these birds ranges from 1 to 2 kg, the most active weight gain occurs in autumn. Crumbs are migratory birds. In winter, they prefer to move to countries with a warm climate. However, they are often spotted in Kamchatka, Primorye and on the shores of the Sea of Azov in winter.

A distinctive feature of the crochal is a narrow and long beak, curved at the end, and on its sides there are small teeth that help the bird to hold the fish.

All kinds of these ducks are painted in very unusual color combinations. So, a large crumb is painted in black, dark gray, white and pink colors. The scaly species is colored brown-olive, red or ash-blue.

Unlike other ducks, crumbs are rarely eaten - their meat can be infected with a tapeworm and has an unpleasant smell. Well, what do you say - lucky people!

The water anolis __Anolis aquaticus__ is a lizard found in Costa Rica and Panama, which hides under water when scared - and continues to breathe there!

At first, it was thought that the lizard stores air in a leather bag on its head - and this theory has been the main one for a long time and has even been replicated by most publications.

But close observation of the water anolis underwater showed that it uses the so-called plastron respiration: water cannot penetrate to the surface of the body due to short hairs with a hydrophobic surface. Because of this, an air bubble forms on the lizard's body.

But where does this life-saving air bubble from a lizard come from? Observations have shown that this bubble is nothing more than the air exhaled by the lizard into the water. And so that it does not come off and float up, depriving her of breath, she breathes very carefully, preventing a strong increase in the volume of this bubble.

It turns out that the lizard breathes the air that it exhales, and does not store. And due to the fact that the exhaled air bubble is in the water, a small gas exchange occurs - carbon dioxide is removed from it, which gives the water anolis the opportunity to breathe such a bubble for about 15 minutes underwater, although usually two to three minutes are enough for this small (5-7 cm) lizard to escape from a predator.

Its natural environment is the forest floor and underground burrows, which these secretive toads leave after heavy rains to procreate. Mexican nosed toads lay eggs along the shores of shallow reservoirs, in search of which they can cover a distance of more than a kilometer.

Nosy toads feed on ants and termites right underground due to the unusual ability to stick their tongue out in front of them, which is unusual for other toads.
